Grants

If the goals of the GLSI match those of your organization, we encourage you to consider applying for a grant. As a first step, read the Overview of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative. This document contains background information and a summary of the GLSI. Then review Two Tools to Help Applicants Prepare Planning Grant Proposals, which provides a decision path for prospective applicants.

In 2009, the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative will award grants in three categories:

  • Planning Grants: Up to four grants of $20,000 each for six months to support the collaborative design and development of a regional hub to support the goals and strategies of the GLSI. All applicants must attend a GLSI Launch Meeting in fall 2008. Proposals are due in January 2009. Grants will be awarded in February 2009.
  • Implementation Grants: Up to two grants of $200,000 each for 20 months to establish and operate a regional hub that supports the goals and strategies of the GLSI in local schools and communities. Proposals are due in July 2009. Grants will be awarded in August 2009.
  • Continuation Grants: Up to three grants of up to $175,000 each for about 20 months to support the development and institutionalization of an existing regional hub and, just as importantly, the school- and community-based projects associated with it. Proposals are due in April and grants will be awarded in May 2009. (A regional hub may receive a maximum of five consecutive continuation grants. Consecutive grants to a hub decrease over time from $175,000 to $150,000 to $130,000 to $80,000 to $50,000. Eligibility is contingent upon the hub continuing to expand the depth and breadth of its impact and its acquisition of matching funds.)

In special cases, small capacity-building grants may be awarded at the discretion of staff to develop readiness within a region or to otherwise advance the goals of the GLSI.

All requests for grants from the GLSI must be submitted through our eGrant system. When you are ready to apply, you may access the eGrant system by clicking here.
