Community

From a global perspective, we all have a place on this wonderful planet. Thinking locally, each of us has an important role to play as a steward of Michigan’s environment. Jerry Dennis, a well-known Michigan author and a supporter of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, wrote “Some Thoughts on the Next Generation of Stewards,” to remind us of this important responsibility.

Through the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI), schools and local, regional, and statewide organizations work together with the support of a regional hub to conserve and protect natural resources. For a list of participating schools and organizations, categorized by hub, click here.

We’re not the only folks who think this sort of work is exciting and important. From the Pacific Northwest to the East Coast, schools and organizations are joining forces to make a difference in their communities. Here are a just a few examples of community-based education that focuses on stewardship and the environment:

The first GLSI-funded projects by local students, teachers, and community organizations will begin in the 2008–2009 school year.

Would you like to get involved? Here are some ideas:

  • If there’s a GLSI hub in your region, contact the hub and let the staff know of your interest.
  • If there’s currently no GLSI hub in your region, there may still be stewardship-related activities in which you can take part.
  • Watch the newspaper for announcements of events that focus on stewardship and conservation.
  • Educate and inspire others! Become a knowledgeable and active ambassador for community-based education, generally, and the GLSI, specifically.
  • Educators, funders and policy-makers need to know of your support.
