OWLS, GLSI grants keep limnology students afield

The following content is an excerpt from the GaylorHearldTimes.Com posted on 3/18/2011:

OTSEGO COUNTY — Grants from the Otsego Wildlife Legacy Society (OWLS) and Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI) are supporting field trips and the purchase of equipment for students of Gaylord High School’s (GHS) limnology class.

The class, taught by instructor Jeff Kalember, focuses on the study of inland lakes and rivers — especially those in Otsego County — and the plants, insects, fish and other creatures that call the water bodies home. Recent field trips have included outings on the Sturgeon and Black rivers and Otsego and Manuka lakes, with lessons ranging from aquatic insects to erosion control (see related listing of field trips).

Kalember said several of his limno students have gone on to pursue biology and environmental degrees and, ultimately, careers in the environmental field (see related story for one such example).

OWLS recently awarded the class with a $900 grant to continue taking its students on educational, hands-on outings.
