Children of the earth: Students in Muskegon and Newaygo counties' schools step up to save environment

The following is an excerpt from a Muskegon Chronicle article posted on 5/29/2010:

WEST MICHIGAN —Jordan Dirette, a Newaygo Middle School seventh-grader, is a guardian of her mother. Mother Earth that is.

Dirette has worked with other students at her school to use native plants along Hess Lake to protect it from polluting runoff.

Raquel Zavala, an eighth-grader at Muskegon's Bunker Middle School, is stepping up to protect the Earth too. She is part of an ongoing effort to restore natural wetlands along Muskegon Lake.

Victoria Learman, a sixth-grader from Whitehall, is Earth's protector as well.

"I really enjoy helping the environment," said Victoria.
