GRAND RAPIDS — Local middle and high school students will be learning about keeping the Great Lakes safe and clean as part of a new effort that kicks off Wednesday with a “green tie” movie premiere.
Their school projects will be part of the work of Groundswell, a coalition of about 35 community groups and 10 schools in Kent County.
It was created with a $199,000 grant through the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, and the Wege and Frey foundations, said Forrest Clift, assistant director of community outreach at Grand Valley State University’s College of Education.
The schools and their projects are planned to be announced at the kick-off event which will feature the IMAX film “Mysteries of the Great Lakes” at Celebration Cinema North, 2121 Celebration Drive NE. Tickets are reserved for Groundswell participants.
The showing is the film’s West Michigan premiere, and Clift said students and other guests are encouraged to wear a green tie or scarf in keeping with a big Hollywood event — but with an environmentally friendly touch.
Cliff said students are expected to be engaged in hands-on environmental projects, including recycling drives and creating rain gardens.
