SVSU receives $18,620 grant

Saginaw Valley State University has been awarded a planning grant of $18,620 from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust under the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.

SVSU will collaborate with community organizations and area schools to raise awareness and understanding of the ecology of the Great Lakes as well as advocate strategies for the long-term sustainability of Great Lakes fisheries.

"This initiative will be an opportunity to link all of the environmental education efforts together to support local agencies, as well as the K-16 teachers and students throughout our area," said Walt Rathkamp, executive director of SVSU's Center for Science and Mathematics Education. "This 'hub' will be able to build a team of students, parents, teachers and other interested people as stewards of our environment."

Several representatives from local schools, nature preserves and environmental groups will be invited to an informational meeting to help kick off the initiative.

The Great Lakes Fishery Trust is a private foundation. Since 1998, the GLFT has awarded over $34 million in grants to 154 projects.
