The evaluation of the GLSI is a long-term effort guided by a series of evaluation questions organized into four categories:

  • Overall GLSI design and implementation
  • Implementation of the three key strategies
    • Place-based education
    • Sustained professional development
    • School-community partnerships
  • Impacts on participants (including students, teachers, partners, and communities)
  • Sustainability of the effort

In the GLSI’s early stages, evaluation efforts focused primarily on the implementation process, including documenting the scope of funded programs, varying approaches to the three key strategies, and basic measures of satisfaction with the programs. As the GLSI matured, both as a broad effort and in the specific contexts of the nine regions served by its hubs, evaluation shifted more toward documenting outcomes for students and communities and means of sustaining the work.
